Well, I had never been to The Cat's Cradle before and as a club I really did like it. Thumbs up on the riser thingys on the sides of the stage, the huge bar area, back smoking patio and large main room. Thumbs down on the lacking of cocktails at the bar....only beer and wine....boo. But the t-shirts are $8.....can't beat that!
The show itself was really fantastic. Very high energy and fun. I love to watch a band play when the members seem like they're having a lot of fun, and this was definitely the case.
Laura and Mac were all over the place po-going. I don't po-go myself, but I did bounce a little. The crowd itself was a bit sedate, but I will chalk that up to the average age being 35 and maybe we're all just too cool to po-go and crowd surf anymore. Oh, well. That's hipsters for you.
The selections were good too...a lot of the early stuff. One new cut "Digging for Something" was really good. Some of the early tunes included: Water Wings, Florida's On Fire, and Skip Steps 1 & 3.
E-Roc felt that a lot of the new cuts sounded like the early years like perhaps they were returning to their roots. If that's the case who wouldn't be happy with a band rediscovering their beginnings? The old and new all fit together really well....tight, hard, fast. Perfect for a band like Superchunk.
I was disappointed that they didn't do "Seed Toss" but that's only because one line from that song has been an inside joke for E-Roc and me for years. "I put a stick in your spokes and you better laugh at my jokes...."
Of course they ended with "Slack Motherf**ker" because....well....they had to!
But the thing I most love about a show like this one is the history. All the peeps there have some kind of history with this band or they wouldn't be there. Laura and Mac have history. The band itself has history. We were all reminded of that time or place or those people from our lives way back then. And it's all this, plus the music itself, that keeps taking us back to The Cradle....or The Cave....or Tremont....or the Milestone. You get the idea. That history keeps us young, makes us feel alive and helps us forget for just a minute the adults we have become.
And don't we all just need that sometimes?
