If you were a child of the 70's and 80's like me, you grew up listening to the music of Dan Fogelberg.  It was everywhere.  This dude was pretty much the patron saint of heartbreak and romance.  But probably one of his saddest songs is one that gets trotted out for the holidays every year, the 1981 classic, Same Old Lang Syne .  Now this song is melancholy.  It's schmaltzy.  And it's not even really about Christmas, but the last lines of it do manage to get me every time: "Just for a moment I was back at school And felt that old familiar pain And, as I turned to make my way back home The snow turned into rain...." So good on you and rest in peace, Dan Fogelberg.  I think you knew what you were doing with that whole singer/songwriter thang.

Now that I'm listening to a lot more terrestrial radio, I am coming across these forgotten gems of pop music past. Anybody that knows me or knows this blog know that I'm pretty specific about what I like and don't like. Chris Daughtry? No. Madonna? Not so much. Pink Floyd? Yes. Wilco? Yes, please. But sometimes there are these crap shoots. Like......P!nk. I do kinda like her. And Lady Gaga. It's shocking, but I like her too. I don't like hardly any kind of current pop like LMFAO. And Nickelback. If you don't know that one, you haven't been paying attention. But every now and then, I do enjoy these oldies from the past. I just like them.....for no good reason. I think it's partly that very 80's sounding synthy vibe. Or maybe it's the fashions. Or maybe it just takes me back to my childhood. No matter what....I can't help but crank it in my cute little car. And then I started realizing that I was embarrassed and would be...

Sometimes redemption is a long time coming , but it's still usually so worth it! I don't really know why so many people hate Nickelback, but if you look them up online you will find MANY sites dedicated to it. To me, there are just an insipid, uninspired, unintelligent group of stuck-in-adolescence guys who make music to delight guys just like them. Their lyrics and content are mostly horrible, their new millennium douche look is just gross, and Chad's voice is one of the worst in pop music. Ever. Sorry for the rant. I guess you can see which side I'm on. But c'mon.....if even your home country doesn't accept you, what can you expect???

Not my favorite song or the favorite band that we're seeing, but it will still be fun for the dumb inside joke that E-Roc and I have for this song. I won't try to explain. You won't get it.

I get so sick of the music that is piped through our speakers at work. Not all of it is bad.....I think it's just the repetition that makes us hate it. But I realize every day that small nuggets of wisdom can be found from questionable songs and artists, thus beginning my first installment of a series I shall call: Great Moment in Crappy Music This series will feature small bits of lyric that I will admit to liking, even if the song or artist may cause me some embarrassment.
