Becky's Greatest Hits Vol. II

 I was never afraid of menopause until I was in it.  Oh, sure I had heard about it my whole life.  I had seen how it seemed to affect women.....mostly in negative ways, depending on who you asked.  It's now very clear to me why many marriages break up around the time of menopause, why affairs seems to happen more often (on both sides) and why seemingly "normal" women seem to lose their minds.  In the mid 80's when The Golden Girls "Blanche" began menopause, her friends urged her to a psychiatrist.  This was after she first thinks she's pregnant, then begins eating and crying non-stop and refusing to get dressed or leave her room.   Oh, if we all only had that luxury.  And if it all came on that sudden and succinct.  No guess work. Is it peri?  Are the hormones completely gone yet?  No wondering if the cycle was really over of if it was going to play tricks on you for the next 5 years or so. After recently chatting with an old friend, I realized how much a list from 2018 needed to be updated!  When you consider over 100 years of filmmaking, a list of 100 is pretty tough!  So this list is mainly based on rewatchability .  In other words, I may have watched a movie, loved it, but also realized I probably didn't need to see it again.  Or there may have been a movie that was a favorite at one time that I have since outgrown, didn't age well or the emotionality of it has just become too much.   In other words, these seem to be the movies I've never managed to outgrow.  Another rabbit hole journey that began due to my love of Amy Irving. And of course, of course, the novel is much better than the miniseries, but it's still a decent watch (even though the ending is flub too....of course).  This miniseries was shown in 1984, but of course, I was too young to care about that way back then! So.  Back to Amy Irving.  Yes, she was an American woman in "brown face" and yes times have changed.  Thankfully.  But her huge, beautiful green eyes and calm steady voice can't be denied.  I have loved her ever since Crossing Delancey and Micki & Maude (another film that probably wouldn't get made today). The mini series was such a big part of television back in the 80's.  It could take a long novel based on an extremely complicated political situation ( the British Raj ) and turn it into an entertaining 5 hour film delivered in watchable segments.  This was actually the first HBO miniseries too.  For my taste, th...

 Paris, Texas is one of those indie movies that's very quiet, very slow-moving. It has all the big themes: guilt, regret, redemption, family drama, childhood, fathers and sons, mothers and sons.....all of it. I was close to turning it off more than once because of how slow it was.  But I was drawn back in by Harry Dean Stanton's sweet, sad eyes and the absolute need to know how it all ended.   I guess these were the same sad eyes he took with him to Pretty in Pink in 1986 but lost by the time he made it to Twin Peaks and certainly by Big Love .   All in all, a beautiful flick that really paints a picture of the early 1980's western United States.  It will make you miss the time when kids walked to school, there was no such thing as a cell phone, and you could wear the same battered jeans for days and days.
