Summer......

“Thanks for this day, for all birds safe in their nests, for whatever this is, for life.”   ~Barbara Kingsolver, Prodigal Summer ~

Elvis Costello: Alison

"Alison, I know this world is killing you. Oh, Alison, my aim is true...." Oh, and Elvis, I'll see you tonight in Uptown .  You'll be huge and awesome and I'll be a little dot far from you, but we'll still have our moment.  Oh, yes.  We will.

Book Pick: Never a Dull Moment: 1971

Imagine it.....the 60's were over......The Beatles had broken up.....singer/songwriters were all the rage.....Mick Jagger got married for the first and last time.  It was 1971 and it was thrilling!  This book goes month by month in talking about all the bands, the social and political events, the personalities and the changes in the world that were both moving the music business and being moved by the music business.  Suddenly, going back to the clubs worked for some and playing big arenas worked for others!  Suddenly, sweet little young ladies from Laurel Canyon were writing record-breaking albums!  Suddenly, the "quiet Beatle" was his own superstar cause advocate!  This book really does a good job of showing the pivot from early rock to the huge glamorous business it was becoming and touches on almost too many young talents of the time to name: Rod Stewart; The Allman Brothers, Bob Dylan, Nick Drake, David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Carole King, Joni Mitchell,...

Netflix Pick: Masterminds

This movie makes exquisite fun of the dum-dums involved in the 1 997 Loomis Fargo heist in Charlotte, NC with spot-on accuracy.  To those of us that remember the very newsworthy heist, the attention to North Carolina detail is fantastic.....from the trailer parks and fashion right down to the old-school registration stickers we used to have on our vehicles back then.  The entire cast, featuring many SNL alums, is downright fantastic but Zach Galifianakis shines as usual.  I just love it when he can play his native NC accent at full-tilt!  It didn't take long for me to feel full-on sorry for hapless schmo David Ghantt , but I have a feeling that whole drama was probably the best thing that ever happened to him when it was all said and done.  Even with a prison sentence.

Everything I Needed to Know I Learned from Dazed and Confused

(It's the last day of school here in the Piedmont of North Carolina.... This classic is always worth a re-run.) School should always be over by the end of May. Preferably before Memorial Day. Always speak in code.  Always. There are always mean girls.  70's, 80's and so on. Mean Girls weren't invented by Millennials. But there are always nice girls too, and you just can't beat an awesome big sister type.  Even if she's not yours. There's always a guy spouting some wisdom. It may be questionable..... But he's ALWAYS got some advice. There's always a mean guy that mysteriously is allowed to hang with the cool nice guys. There's always a dippy coach that thinks he's still cool. There's always a mean coach that THINKS he's noticed everything. There's that one cool teacher that wants to inspire no matter how little you really care. There's that one teacher who's ...

Book Pick: Working Class Mystic

Another glimpse into the spiritual soul of The Quiet Beatle that many of us loved so much.  This book isn't terribly long and doesn't bog down in the details of early life, The Beatles or forgotten romances.  Instead it focuses on the spiritual growth that George attained after trying LSD for the first time, learning to chant and meditate and eventually focusing his life around Hinduism and Krishna.  This book will make you love the man whose life was cut way too short all the more as it shows his all-too-human side all the while striving toward the purest living he could find.
