The Great Guy Romper Debate

Can I just say something about this new trend that the world seems to think is gonna happen?  That men are gonna wear one-piece rompers this summer?

First off, I just don't see it happening.  If those things don't come with some sort of quick way out for the pee-peeing, I just don't see guys wearing them.  Too much trouble for them.  Women have been putting up with taking their clothes all the way down forevs.  Guys?  Not so much.

I don't have any hate for the outfits if that's what someone is into.  Personally, I don't think they're very attractive on a dude.  Even if the dude has a great body.  They just don't work for me.  To each his own and all, but I don't dig it.

It's not like I'm opposed to guys wearing one pieces.  Like overalls.  I was a teenager in the 90's when this was veeeery trendy.  But again, it's not really a good look for a guy.  Not like this.

See this guy right here?  This guy works for a living.  This is the look of overalls I'm all about.  He needs those pockets and adjustable straps.  This adorable farmer gets the job done and looks super cute while he's doing it.  Think he wears a romper on the weekends?  Think again.

I like hardworking men.  Men that get dirty all day.  These guys?  They don't do that.  They are pin-ups for peeps who think they like a hardworking man.  They probably really have no idea what that looks like.  I can tell you those guys typically don't wear designer underwear though.  JS.

These guys know something about a hard day's work.  And they don't give 2 flying shits about what they wear all day as long as it meets safety regs.  They need clothes they can kneel and reach in without having to worry about the buttons flying off.  Can rompers provide that kind of fluidity?  I doubt it.

Now some guys will try the romper trend because they think they can pull it off.  They think they can look like Cam Newton.  Newsflash, most guys do not.  Should they even try?  Well, like I said before, to each his own.  But having a perfect healthy body like Cam's certainly helps in the romper department.  Most of us girls decided long ago that Cam can do whatever he likes!

And before you try to make me feel bad that I dig on my very hairy and very masculine-looking men, I turn you to the great Nikki Giovanni who loved Beautiful Black Men.  She made no apology for loving Wilson Pickett and Mighty Mighty Sly.  As people we know what we like...what turns our heads and what doesn't.  Should we feel badly about that?

Yeah, I like dudes with beards.  Big crazy dirty beards.  I like guys that get dirty at work.  I like guys with deep voices and hairy chests and bulky bodies....the kind that don't really, uh, fit into rompers.  Do I have a type?  Well, hellz yes, I do!

Not artistic or artisanal beards.  Not bodies that are waxed and shaven within an inch of life.  Not clean carpenter jeans that have never seen any kind of carpentering.  I guess I just like, well, manly men.  I'll stand by while someone comes over to rip me to shreds for saying that.....

But in the words of Garth Brooks (another guy who I'm pretty sure won't wear a romper) y'all will just have to "blame it all on my roots".  I grew up watching movies like "The Outsiders" and "Dirty Dancing" and with a dad who was a carpenter.  I grew up in the country with boys who learned to drive tractors before cars.  These guys were my coming of age and early education.  I don't even think science and medication has figured out how to fix that to this day!

Do I like sensitive artsy men?  Jesus H.  Have you ever heard me howl away with The Cure and Psychedelic Furs?  I friggin love them!  But do they get my goat like Patrick Swayze used to?  Not so much.  And neither do guys in rompers.  I ain't saying I hate any of them.  I guess I'm just saying you shouldn't expect to see my hubs in one.  It's not his style or mine.  And in the end, I guess that's one of the many, many reasons why we're together.

BTW, if you've ever wondered if there's a perfect combination of beardy rugged man and sensitive artistic man, why yes, there is!  There really is!  But I've STILL never seen Paul in a romper!  Oh, wait.....

Reclaiming Your Childhood: Priceless

This story might take a minute to tell. Bear with me. When my sister and I were little girls, my mother took us to a large baptist church in town. Even as a child, I never remember feeling welcome there.  But I do remember the lovely older couple that kept my Sunday School class. They gave us saltines and kool-aid, and I remember thinking they would be nice grandparents to have. At Christmastime, the Sunday School class was set to have a random gift exchange. Every child was supposed to bring a gift that could be exchanged with any other child.....no specific gift designations.  I received the gift of an Avon 7 bead necklace which was very popular at the time.  I loved it so much and was thrilled to have it!  I was somewhere between 5 and 7 at the time. (Back in the 1970's and 80's, Avon was a cosmetic company that was also known for it's inexpensive jewelry.  I couldn't find a price on what this necklace would have cost back then, but apparently there is ...

My Week with Rumor

My dog Rumor was an experiment.  A trial offer.  And all parties knew that going in.  Except for maybe Rumor. Rumor was an outdoor country dog.  His given name was Ruger (named after a firearm if you don't know, I didn't) which made sense for a dog raised in hunting country.  He was a stray that came to live with a loving family at about the age of 1.  He lived outdoors, slept in a garage crate at night, frolicked with an older dog pack and had a lovely life. We think he was about 4 years old.  He had been neutered, had vet care and was by no means a "rescue". His dad offered Ruger to me on a give-it-a-try basis.  He knew I wanted a dog. He told me Ruger would be sweet to me and also be my protector.  He was right on both counts.  He told me if it didn't work out, I could bring Ruger back to him and his wife.  I could tell they were a little sad when they dropped him off.  It made me glad to see that Ruger came from such ...

NYE for $200, Alex

Can we all just agree that New Year's Eve is the worst of the string of winter holidays?  I would even go so far as saying it's THE WORST of all the holidays.  I loved when Stanford Blatch defined a party as feeling very "forced festive".  To me, most NYE parties feel that way.  The idea that this is a big year-end blow-out and we'd all damn well better make it awesome! The reason I hate NYE is because it combines two of things I most hate about celebrations: cold weather and crowds.  Plus it's during a time of year when everyone has already spent all their money.  AND you usually have to the leave the house.  ADDITIONALLY, you have to stay up late.  It's a big F.U. from me on all this.   I would dare say that some of my happiest New Year's memories have been spent at home in my pajamas with either my child, an S.O. or happily alone.  I remember one unforgettable year of moving into a 3rd floor apartment on NYE.  I rememb...
