Girls Gone Grey

Aging is tricky and not necessarily for all the reasons you might think.  Sure, you've got more bills.  Probably more health issues.  And young cute boys start calling you ma'am and Miss with your first name.

But the upside is, sometimes you have a little bit more money.  If you're empty-nesting like me, you may have a little more free time.  You may even have some fun opportunities that make you want to update your look and enhance your wardrobe.

And you may have GREY HAIR.

Sigh.

This is such an ongoing issue for me.  I'll chime in with the rest of the culture and say that men look so cute with grey hair.  In their heads, in their beards, in their mustaches......dude!  They are Silver Foxes!  They are streaks of silver lightning, and they don't even know it!

(Aside: I was dating a fine-ass silver fox of a man who was almost the ruination of me.  I blame the grey!  It did me in!  Rant over.)

And then I started noticing some fine-ass girlfriends of mine that were looking good with their grey hair coming in.  And I thought, dang girl, if they can do it, so can you!

Then I noticed some celebrities that also looked good going grey.  My long-time style icon, Andie MacDowell did it.  A local and national writer and commentator, Sheri Lynch, did it.  So again, I consulted Becky and got a resounding "go for it girl" from deep inside.

The problem is, I am not friends.  And clearly, I am not Andie or Sheri.

They have stylists, artists, colorists and teams making it happen. And they are freaking beautiful!

I have myself.  I don't even have my hot-ass silver fox anymore telling me that I'm cute.  (And I'm not about to share his pic.  Y'all ain't ready.)

I have nearly 30 years of dyed hair and weird roots.  (Remember when we used to dye it for "fun"?) I have budgetary issues.  I have no upcoming tv appearances.  I have no red carpets.  I have no followers and no influence!!!!

Which I suddenly realized was kind of freeing.  Nobody is judging me except myself.  And maybe if grey is what I want, grey is what I should be.

I asked my sister to come along on my grey-streaked journey, and she said she wasn't ready.  Isn't that sad?  As women, we have to be "ready".  But I understand her completely.  I haven't been ready for a while either.  I thought that going grey was somehow throwing in the towel and giving up.  It was some sort of white flag waving on my looks and sexuality.  It was a fire-lit signal to the menopause parade to show up and start marching.

Until I remembered all the pep talks I had given to so many people around me, men and women, about beauty and confidence from within.  Maybe it's time for Miss Becky to just go ahead and own being "Miss Becky".

But just in case I have doubts or low days, I made myself a few new memojis to remind myself that I'll still be cute with less chemically-enhanced hair:

And these gals look pretty cool to me.  They're my new role models.  Stay tuned......

Reclaiming Your Childhood: Priceless

This story might take a minute to tell. Bear with me. When my sister and I were little girls, my mother took us to a large baptist church in town. Even as a child, I never remember feeling welcome there.  But I do remember the lovely older couple that kept my Sunday School class. They gave us saltines and kool-aid, and I remember thinking they would be nice grandparents to have. At Christmastime, the Sunday School class was set to have a random gift exchange. Every child was supposed to bring a gift that could be exchanged with any other child.....no specific gift designations.  I received the gift of an Avon 7 bead necklace which was very popular at the time.  I loved it so much and was thrilled to have it!  I was somewhere between 5 and 7 at the time. (Back in the 1970's and 80's, Avon was a cosmetic company that was also known for it's inexpensive jewelry.  I couldn't find a price on what this necklace would have cost back then, but apparently there is ...

My Week with Rumor

My dog Rumor was an experiment.  A trial offer.  And all parties knew that going in.  Except for maybe Rumor. Rumor was an outdoor country dog.  His given name was Ruger (named after a firearm if you don't know, I didn't) which made sense for a dog raised in hunting country.  He was a stray that came to live with a loving family at about the age of 1.  He lived outdoors, slept in a garage crate at night, frolicked with an older dog pack and had a lovely life. We think he was about 4 years old.  He had been neutered, had vet care and was by no means a "rescue". His dad offered Ruger to me on a give-it-a-try basis.  He knew I wanted a dog. He told me Ruger would be sweet to me and also be my protector.  He was right on both counts.  He told me if it didn't work out, I could bring Ruger back to him and his wife.  I could tell they were a little sad when they dropped him off.  It made me glad to see that Ruger came from such ...

NYE for $200, Alex

Can we all just agree that New Year's Eve is the worst of the string of winter holidays?  I would even go so far as saying it's THE WORST of all the holidays.  I loved when Stanford Blatch defined a party as feeling very "forced festive".  To me, most NYE parties feel that way.  The idea that this is a big year-end blow-out and we'd all damn well better make it awesome! The reason I hate NYE is because it combines two of things I most hate about celebrations: cold weather and crowds.  Plus it's during a time of year when everyone has already spent all their money.  AND you usually have to the leave the house.  ADDITIONALLY, you have to stay up late.  It's a big F.U. from me on all this.   I would dare say that some of my happiest New Year's memories have been spent at home in my pajamas with either my child, an S.O. or happily alone.  I remember one unforgettable year of moving into a 3rd floor apartment on NYE.  I rememb...
