Enough With the "Shoulds"

Don't you hate it when peeps are always trying to tell you what you should like?  I think I am finally done with trying to figure out what others find "good".  And believe me, I give most all of them a try before I tap out!  But here's a list of all manner of media and art that I should give a crap about but just don't!  What's on your list?

Movies:
Any of The Hangover movies.  I'm not dude enough, I guess.

Any of the Austin Powers movies.  See above.

The new It movie based on the Stephen King novel. Not happening.

"Torture porn" movies.  You people just need to see a therapist and stop keeping up the pretense of normal.

The overrun of horror movies on all streaming services this time of year.  Why would I want to be more scared than usual?

Books:
A Confederacy of Dunces: I know it's Pulitizer-prize winning, but I guess I just don't get it.  Such a downer too.  And nobody wants to hear that much about a grown man's gassiness.

Anything by Susan Sontag.  I wish I was smart enough.  I guess I'm not.

The Fifty Shades of Gray series, and yes I did read the first one.  No thanks.

The old It novel that is now and updated film.   See above.  Nopity, nope, nope.

So-called "classics" that are hard to translate into today's world and hard to understand based on dated language.  I've tried....I really have.  Maybe my brain just can't work that way anymore?  I'm looking at you Bronte sisters.

Any positive-thinking-change-your-perspective-change-your-life-type crap particularly in the vein of Eat, Pray, Love.  Just get the hell out of here with that.

Christian fiction.  What the hell?

Music:
Ed Sheeran

Bruno Mars

Ke$ha

Bro country. Including by not limited to: Luke Bryan, Zac Brown, and I'm not sure how, but Nickelback kinda fits in here too.

Top 40 music: it's just so precious-sounding these days.  Where's the angst?  The sex?  The raw power?  It's all so meh....and I mean the adult-contempo and kiddie stuff.  How did everyone go so middle of the road?

Very breathy female singers.  What are you afraid of exactly?

TV Shows:
Game of Thrones: I'm sorry, it's just too violent and has too many diversions from the novels.

Dancing With the Stars: too corny.

The Bachelor, Bachelorette, any reality dating show: like I want to see up close and personal what happens when fools leave bars.

Just about anything on HGTV.  How do peeps have these budgets for a first home?

CSI, The Good Doctor or any TV drama related to crime, healthcare or violence: isn't the real world icky enough?

Other & Sundry:
Anything pumpkin-spiced.  Hey, I love fall for the looks, not so much for the flavors.

Huge rollercoasters.  Why?  Just, why?

Expensive coffee.  The stuff at Circle K is actually better than Starbucks and like 87% cheaper.

Skinny jeans on men and boys.  Just doesn't work, dudes.

Driving really expensive cars, having the very latest and most-expensive technology and spending a lot of cash on shoes.  I just don't have the gene, I guess.

Making fun of women named Becky.  Like, what do we ever do to you????

Constantly talking about and searching for coupons, Groupons, deals and bargains.  I mean, I'm broke too, but how boring is this?

Reclaiming Your Childhood: Priceless

This story might take a minute to tell. Bear with me. When my sister and I were little girls, my mother took us to a large baptist church in town. Even as a child, I never remember feeling welcome there.  But I do remember the lovely older couple that kept my Sunday School class. They gave us saltines and kool-aid, and I remember thinking they would be nice grandparents to have. At Christmastime, the Sunday School class was set to have a random gift exchange. Every child was supposed to bring a gift that could be exchanged with any other child.....no specific gift designations.  I received the gift of an Avon 7 bead necklace which was very popular at the time.  I loved it so much and was thrilled to have it!  I was somewhere between 5 and 7 at the time. (Back in the 1970's and 80's, Avon was a cosmetic company that was also known for it's inexpensive jewelry.  I couldn't find a price on what this necklace would have cost back then, but apparently there is ...

My Week with Rumor

My dog Rumor was an experiment.  A trial offer.  And all parties knew that going in.  Except for maybe Rumor. Rumor was an outdoor country dog.  His given name was Ruger (named after a firearm if you don't know, I didn't) which made sense for a dog raised in hunting country.  He was a stray that came to live with a loving family at about the age of 1.  He lived outdoors, slept in a garage crate at night, frolicked with an older dog pack and had a lovely life. We think he was about 4 years old.  He had been neutered, had vet care and was by no means a "rescue". His dad offered Ruger to me on a give-it-a-try basis.  He knew I wanted a dog. He told me Ruger would be sweet to me and also be my protector.  He was right on both counts.  He told me if it didn't work out, I could bring Ruger back to him and his wife.  I could tell they were a little sad when they dropped him off.  It made me glad to see that Ruger came from such ...

NYE for $200, Alex

Can we all just agree that New Year's Eve is the worst of the string of winter holidays?  I would even go so far as saying it's THE WORST of all the holidays.  I loved when Stanford Blatch defined a party as feeling very "forced festive".  To me, most NYE parties feel that way.  The idea that this is a big year-end blow-out and we'd all damn well better make it awesome! The reason I hate NYE is because it combines two of things I most hate about celebrations: cold weather and crowds.  Plus it's during a time of year when everyone has already spent all their money.  AND you usually have to the leave the house.  ADDITIONALLY, you have to stay up late.  It's a big F.U. from me on all this.   I would dare say that some of my happiest New Year's memories have been spent at home in my pajamas with either my child, an S.O. or happily alone.  I remember one unforgettable year of moving into a 3rd floor apartment on NYE.  I rememb...
