So Me.....

Another Talented Loss

Netflix Pick: Trainwreck

This could not have a more appropriate title.  I guess I just don't have the Schumer gene.  I get why people like her stand-up.....she says all the things most people are afraid to say.  But I'm sorry, this movie was just a downer.  A predictable downer at that.  My husband and I decided midway through that all Apatow movies have a formula: they start out funny, always have a stoner/fuck-up character and always get way too dark and slow before the end.  Oh, and they're all too long.  Also, I feel like Amy owes some big-time royalties to Candace Bushnell for all the S&TC rip-offs and to whoever wrote the 90's rom-com Forget Paris for the current sports figure insertions.  ( Forget Paris , btw, I would watch every day of the week and twice on Sunday before sitting through this one again.) I'm not saying it didn't have some funny moments.  It did.  But they weren't enough to drown out the sounds of soul-sucking that followed ...

I hope they're rocking out together somewhere in the great beyond.....

Wintertime Movies

I was doing a little online reading today and discovered that a) there's a lot of assholes out there and b) most online writers take themselves waaaaay too seriously.  So apropos of nothing, here we go with my list of movies that make me think of wintertime.  Because a) it's finally winter here in North Carolina and b) sometimes you just need a flick that suits the mood and c) I don't want to ever be on the list of peeps taking themselves too seriously. Nothing profound.  It's just that simple.  Curl up with your snuggle bear and enjoy....... Bridget Jones' Diary: It's London in winter, don't worry with a coat, Bridge! Fargo: So much snow the dipshit can't find the suitcase full of money later! Love Story: This is basically how all New England college kids do the sex. The Shining: Don't watch this ever.  Just checking to make sure you were paying attention. Hot Tub Time Machine: 80's retro at a ski lodge. Bonus: my e...

Happy Birthday, Elvis!

So Elvis would have been 81 today!  Since he died in 1977, I don't really remember the time when he was alive.  However, I do remember the impact on the culture all the time I was growing up.  My mom had the newspaper clipping from the day he died, she talked about remembering that day, she had some of his albums and even had Christmas ornaments with his likeness! I think I began to appreciate Elvis by watching his movies before I liked his music.  I remember watching lots of his movies with my mom: Love Me Tender, It Happened At the World's Fair  and others.  The one I loved most was Blue Hawaii .  Short shorts be damned, I liked it.  And now my kid loves the song "I Can't Help Falling in Love With You".  Sometimes, I just do parenting right despite myself. In his later years, but before he got sick and terrible looking, I thought of my dad as looking like Elvis.  Hey, it was the late 70's.  That was how dads, some dad...
